THE WOOD BISON,Bison bison athabascue, also called Mountain Bison is a distinct northern subspecies of the North American bison and are truly the Canadian bison. It's original range included much of the boreal forest regions from the southern tip of Alaska, through the Yukon and Northwest Territories, north eastern British Columbia, northern Alberta and western Saskatchewan.
The Wood Bison differs from the Plains Bison in a number of important ways. Most notably, the Wood Bison is heavier, with large males weighing over 2500 pounds. The highest point of the Wood Bison is well ahead of it's front legs, while the Plains Bison's highest point is directly above the front legs. Wood bison also have larger horn cores, a darker and woollier pellagra, and less hair on their forelegs and beard. Wood Bison do not migrate north and south as do the Plains Bison.
UNFORTUNATELY: PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS DO NOT ALWAYS KNOW THE DIFFERENCE AND I HAVE SEEN THE SAME PHOTO TAGGED AS BOTH A PLAINS BISON AND A WOODS BISON--THE PHOTO I REFER TO HAVING BEEN TAKEN IN ELK ISLAND NATIONAL PARK ALBERTA CANADA.
