SURVIVAL-THE HIERARCHY OF NEEDS AND THE RULES OF CANADA'S TRUE, NATIONAL GAME.

  • If we don't have air, we die.
  • If we don't have food, we die.
  • If we don't have shelter, we die.
  • If we don't have water, we die.

We can live longer without food than we can live without shelter or water. We can live longer without water than we can without shelter. Usually, we can live longer without shelter than we can without air.
Air, Shelter, Water, Food; Is This, Then, the Hierarchy of Survival Needs?
Not necessarily; how long we can go without any one of these things will vary, depending on conditions. Usually the brain will start to die after six minutes without air but there have been cases reported of a person being under water, with no air, for over a half hour and still recovering with no ill effects. A person can some times go for a day or more with no shelter but if exposed to real extreme heat or cold--example a fire or a blast of compressed gasses--can be dead in a matter of seconds. Then too: what do we mean by no shelter? Do we mean without an abode, homeless? There are many people, right here in Vancouver, that have no home. Do we mean with no clothing? In former times, in tropical  climes, many people made a habit of going without clothing--some still do-- at nude beaches.

What Then, is the Hierarchy?
There is one survival need; that so far, we have not looked at. The one need that other animals are not able to do much about. That need is FIRST-AID--.
THE NEED THAT IS VERY OFTEN OVER LOOKED, WHEN PLANNING HOW TO COPE WITH; DISASTER, OR FOR SURVIVAL IS FIRST AID.
What Then, is First-aid?
If someone can't breath and we clear the air-way or put them in a position so that they can. That is first-aid. If a person is drowning and we pull them out of the water. That is first-aid. If a person has no shelter and we provide some. That is first-aid. If a person has no clothing and we provide some. That is first- aid. If a person has no water and we provide it. That is first-aid. If a person is injured and bleeding and we stop the bleeding and treat the injury. That is first-aid.

FIRST-AID IS THE FIRST RESPONSE TO WHAT IS MOST NEEDED--AND WHAT IS MOST NEEDED IS ALWAYS FIRST-AID.

BECAUSE WE ARE HUMAN; OR AT LEAST CLAIM TO BE, FIRST- AID IS ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, FIRST.
