Native to Western Canada, from British Columbia as far South
as Northern California; Ground cone is a species of parasitic plant in the
broomrape family; also known by the common names of VANCOUVER GROUNDCONE and
Small Groundcone. It is parasitic to alder, cranberry, and sala bushes (Gaultheria shallon is a leathery-leaved shrub in
the heather family(Ericaceae), native to Western
Canada. In English, it is known as salal, shallon, or
simply Gaultheria in Britain.). It is visible above ground as
purplish brown or yellow inflorescence.
- Potato-like stem base is edible raw.
- Grows in coastal forests, at the base of alders salal or cranberry bushes.
